Shiny Objects are everywhere. Their design in nature is to catch our attention, invoke awe and even desire. They represent something we think would increase value in our life, even if only through owning their beauty. They are the stuff that successful marketing campaigns are built around. And… they can also serve as an extreme distraction to our process and our purpose. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How many times have you found yourself, robotically clicking the keys of the keyboard, with credit card in hand, purchasing something that has caught your eye? The rush feels good. This will be the game changer! “I’ll read this book or attend this course or own this necklace and my life will, in fact change!” After obtaining the thing you have purchased, however, you find that all you’ve achieved is one more thing to read, learn or wear…. The substance has not outlasted the shine that turned your head because you forgot to check whether this thing was in alignment with your process. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your process isn’t pretty. It’s gritty and tough and includes the lessons that make you question whether or not it’s worth it to stay on your path. The process can even taunt you at times, asking: “Who are YOU to make this thing, start this business, live your life this way?” How do we bring more shine to this messy processing phase? By matching the substance of the shiny object to the purpose of your process. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Defining the themes of your process can make this part easier. When you complete the sentence: “As a result of this process, I will (learn, achieve, let go of) _________.” you then have a purpose statement that you can weigh your shiny distractions up against. For example: If you are a new Pilates Teacher who desires to have a depth of knowledge, perhaps an in-depth continuing education course on fascia would not be in alignment with your process – for now. It’s ok to not be doing the things that everyone else is doing. Serve your purpose through aligning your endeavors with each other and forge your own pathway in the process!

xoxo
